Web Site Accessibility Case Study: Lutroo.com We all know the story of the builder - who is great at his work. He spends many hours in other people's houses fixing them up. But at home - there is strife, because the wife cannot understand why their house is in such poor repair.

"There is too much work to do" is the argument of the builder and so spends all his time doing for other people what he should perhaps do for his wife.

Well, we were determined that our website shouldn't be like the builder's house but should rather showcase our abilities. So it is worth pointing out some of the accessibility features of our website:

Firstly, we have to comply with the global W3C accessibility guidelines (they are the web "council" that set standards).

Beyond that - there are some things that whilst not required - are just good practice which have also done.

This means that the website can be viewed easily by web text readers, and has keyboard shortcuts so a mouse is not required to navigate the site.

If you want to know more specifics, view our accessibility policy.

Accessibility - a brief explanation

Web accessibility is simply making your website accessible to all users, including those who have some form of disability.

There are a number of reasons why accessibility is an important for you, especially as the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) makes it unlawful for a service provider to discriminate against a disabled person by refusing to provide any service which it provides to members of the public…and that includes websites.

There have been a number of high profile cases where companies have been sued as their websites do not comply with the accessibility requirements.

Of course, there are a number of benefits to having an accessible website other than you fulfil a legal duty.

Accessible websites also have the potential to widen a website’s current audience and reach new ones:

  • A recent survey found that there are almost 10 million disabled people in the UK with a combined spending power in the region of £80 billion a year.
  • On top of this, there are millions of other individuals that are affected by sensory, physical and/or cognitive impairments, including those resulting from the ageing process – so making your website accessible to them is a clever marketing move for you business!
  • Research by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) in the UK has also found that an accessible website is generally better for people without disabilities as they are better optimized and easier to use.
  • Accessible websites can also be better viewed on other media such as PDAs (handhelds) and mobile phones. Given that this type of media is increasing massively in the UK – getting your website on these media is again a clever marketing move.
  • Accessible website, on the whole, have better search engine rankings – meaning more traffic for you and your website.
